Dance Allsorts captures a new stage on Granville Island by bringing together OURO Collective and Heather Laura Gray to Performance Works.
In their second season, OURO Collective continues the development of their unique movement aesthetic, a hybrid between breaking, waacking, hip hop, popping and contemporary dance, while exploring new ideas around the choreographic process for street dance based works. OURO will be showing a 30-minute excerpt from their first full length work, PACE which will premiere in April 2016 and will include collaborations with photographer, Jourdan Tymkow and Montreal’s Tentacle Tribe. PACE examines the increasing loss of time in our lives as we live with constant distraction, financial pressure, overfilled schedules, and the rapid consumption of social media resulting in forgotten traditions and cultural values, such as the importance of community, food, and our elders.
Heather Laura Gray is a Vancouver-based choreographer with a background in theatre and film. Her work combines dense physicality within contemporary and street dance styles, along with introspective concepts to engage the audience’s inner and outer stimuli. Her upcoming work The Tunnel (working title) explores a mysterious world, stories and characters tangled in dark illusions of their own making as they move towards self understanding. The piece plays with raw physicality embedded in intricate subtleties.
Dance Allsorts is a dynamic and inspiring performance and workshop series presented by New Works and held with gratitude on unceded Coast Salish Territory. New Works gratefully acknowledges the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, Canada Council for the Arts, City of Vancouver, Province of British Columbia, British Columbia Arts Council, CMHC Granville Island, Granville Island Cultural Society, and our media sponsor: The Georgia Straight.
