Expect the unexpected as intriguing and exhilarating dances pop up in unusual spaces throughout the island. Pop Up Dances are free tours of site-specific dance performances that celebrate dance in all its forms: traditional, classical, and popular, showcasing the energy and spontaneous excitement behind each one.

Pop Up Dances is a FREE EVENT presented by New Works through a Cultural Partnership with CMHC Granville Island as part of Winterruption Festival.

Julie Lebel: Hello Hello
Hello Hello is a short form choreography presented in unusual setting. Hello Hello playfully transforms a group of timid characters into bolder and connected people.  Original choreography by Julie Lebel, performed by Sarah Ballard Gallos, Meredith Kalaman, Iwona Gilarska and Julie Lebel.

Heather Laura Gray: The Tunnel (work-progress excerpts)
The Tunnel explores a mysterious world, stories and characters tangled in dark illusions of their own making as they move towards self understanding. The piece plays with raw physicality embedded in intricate subtleties.

Lorita Leung Dance Company: Flying Apsaras
Flying Apsaras is a Classical Chinese dance in the Dunhuang style, inspired by ancient Buddhist paintings found in the Mogao Caves along the Silk Road.  The apsaras are female spirits of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist mythology.

Gabriel and Monica Monty – Tango Lab
Always changing, always evolving. Each dance piece is unique, such freedom is the beauty found in the music and dance of Argentine tango.

Bloco Energia
Playing rhythms from Brazil and other parts of the world, this high energy group of drummers will lead the way as we move between the tour locations.
