History

New Works was founded in 1993 by Barb Clausen (also a founder of The Dance Centre) and a small collective to support artists and projects that weren’t receiving the exposure they deserved, help artists realize their vision and connect hungry audiences and communities with talented local performers.

Although originally designed to support artists from every field, New Works shifted its focus to concentrate on dance and became both a presenter of diverse dance styles and manager of up-and-coming dance organizations. Through its work, New Works has helped its partners become fully-sustainable, successful organizations and has given its artists the opportunity to perform in professional venues to welcoming audiences.

In 2010, New Works’ founder, Barb Clausen stepped down after 17 years of growing the company from an idea to the organization it is today. Her sizable shoes have been filled by Joyce Rosario, an equally capable administrator and community engager who was previously the Executive Director of Made in BC, Dance on Tour. With new leadership, but the same ideals, New Works will continue to foster dance in our communities, connect artists with audiences and work to celebrate Vancouver’s cultural excellence.
