New Works, New Brand
10-22-2011Welcome to New Works’ new website and new visual identity! We recently worked with Cause+Affect Design Ltd. to completely revamp our brand identity so it would more closely match who we are and what we do.
We’re not a new New Works and this isn’t a departure from our commitment to presenting all sorts of dance for all sorts of people or working with emerging and established artistic talent in this city. We just needed a new brand that would better represent that.
One of the challenging things of a redesign is having to ask tough questions of yourself. Who are you? What do you value? What sets you apart? It requires being objective about something you’re deeply involved in, which is always difficult.
Through this introspective process we affirmed a few things that we always believed and wanted to be true: We are unique; we’re the only performance/management hybrid in Vancouver; our free, public events are exceptional; we present dance you may not see elsewhere; we have a strong history and reputation; and we have a great collaborative relationship with our artists. We’re fun, exciting, accessible, colourful, vibrant and creative.
We needed to elevate our design to this level.
It needed to make us look more professional, artistic, dynamic, cutting edge.
It needed to better represent the performances we present and the artists we manage.
There was also a need to more accurately define what we do. Our previous website, brochures and design didn’t adequately emphasize our artist management role, which makes up half of what we do. We’re incredibly proud of the work we have done to help build up our artists and it defines who we are. Now we hope that we can tell that story a little better.
On the design
New Works’ new identity is a mixture of modern geometric compositions and strong typography, evolved around the symmetrical and ordering quality of parallelograms and triangles.
These shapes symbolize the equal proportions within the company as well as a gateway, an opening to a world of dance. Combined with photography, they highlight the bodies and movement of dancers. Like strong, dynamic bodies in dance, the shapes overlap each other and create new colors and energy to refresh people's mind. Different color combinations indicate the diversity and variable styles to be discovered with New Works.
