New Works is excited to present, in partnership with Alexandra Caprara, the full-length world premiere of gently divine, violently disorientating (GDVD). This innovative interdisciplinary performance explores the collaboration between technology and the performers as partners. From the usage of live camera work to graphic projections, Alexandra invites audiences to engage in the act of redefining the body, challenge your perceptions, and celebrate the process of stepping into your own authenticity.

About Alexandra Caprara
Alexandra Caprara (she/her) is a queer, interdisciplinary artist from Toronto, Ontario, whose practice is grounded in performance making and design. She has worked internationally as a director, performer, and designer for lighting and video projection, and has presented her work across Canada alongside companies such as Arts Club, High Performance Rodeo, WorkMan Arts, Theatre Replacement, and GoodWoman Dance. Her practice ranges from working in theatre, dance, and installation art, with a focus on the interplay between lighting and projection as scenographic and choreographic elements on stage. Her design research has been presented at the Prague Quadrennial “Technologies” Symposium (2024), with other select credits including the direction and creation of “Ultra Violets” (re:Naissance Opera 2024), lighting design for “The Golden Anniversaries” (Arts Club),and projection design for “A Silent Howl” (Dancing on The Edge). She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Simon Fraser University, and resides in Vancouver.

As a New Works’ Artist in Residence, Alexandra Caprara invites audiences into the theatre for a behind the scenes look at preparations for the upcoming premiere performance of gently divine, violently disorientating (GDVD). Alexandra newest work focuses on experimenting and fine-tuning with their technology elements, in relation to the choreography, lights, and sound. This free event will include a work-in-progress performance of the piece, and an informal talkback discussion with Alexandra and the collaborating artists.
