Internships

Step into the local dance community — with the support of New Works

We are passionate about creating learning and leadership opportunities for students, and supporting new practitioners in the arts through mentorship and hands-on experiences. Over the years, New Works has welcomed a diversity of student interns who bring their energy, curiosity, and passion into our team, jumping in on a special project, a semester-long internship, or even a year-long placement. Interns have gone on to work for many different local arts non-profits, create or produce their own work, and apply their learning and experience to a parallel practice.

We've worked with students who are studying dance, music, film, production design, communications, pursing an interdisciplinary masters, arts management, and more. The performing arts community is small and we're always thrilled to reconnect with a colleague who used to intern with New Works!

What types of internships do you offer?

Internships encompass different types of opportunities depending on our current programming and staff capacity. It may include:

  • Supporting the planning and production of public dance events and artist residencies
  • Assisting with communications, social media, and digital marketing
  • Helping organize internal systems and documentation
  • Working on community engagement and donor relations
  • Collaborating on artist and partner communications

And more! We aim to create a meaningful, supportive experience that balances real-world responsibility with learning and mentorship. You’ll be part of team meetings, receive feedback, and have opportunities to reflect on your role in the arts community.

Do I have to be a student to apply?

During Fall and Spring semester we usually post internship opportunities directly through post-secondary institutions like SFU School for the Contemporary Arts, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and Capilano University. In the Summer, we post an open internship opportunity, welcoming applications from anyone who wants to join our team and learn more even if you are not currently attending a university.

All of our current, open internship opportunities will be shared on this page as available.

If you would like to intern with New Works for university credit, directed studies, or as a co-op placement, but don't see us as a placement option through your school, let's connect. We don't always know where the need is, and always appreciate receiving feedback where more internships are requested.

We love working with students who are:

  • Curious and eager to learn
  • Passionate about the arts, especially dance
  • Excited to work collaboratively
  • Open to trying new things and taking initiative
