Residencies
New Works supports dance artists through a diversity of residency opportunities each season.
A New Works residency is a safe space for creative risk taking. Opportunities are built as process-focused artist-lead residency spaces which are responsive to the creative’s needs. This may look like time in the studio, in the theatre, or a mix of the two, and may or may not include a public sharing.
Summer Residency Opportunities
Over the summer, New Works often partners with Out Innerspace to offer in-studio residency time at Q7. This intensive period allows artists space to focus in on their craft with no pressure to pressure to show or share a final product.
Winter Residency Opportunities
New Works partners with local theatres including the Roundhouse Community Centre, ANNEX, and Scotiabank Dance Centre, to support in-theatre residencies. Access to these professional spaces allows artists the opportunity to explore complex theatrical elements such as lights, projection, sets and more. Again, it is up to the artist in residence if they would like to include a public sharing of work as part of this time.

JL²
Juolin Lee & Jia Yi (Judy) Luo

“JL²: Formation” is the research and development of a collective dance practice between its members. This project looks at witnessing each other with rigorous focus and compassion. As artists shaped by hybrid identities, JL² explores how cultural upbringing, physical training, and geographic location influence the body’s expression.
