About the work

COLORES, co-produced by Lyzah and Jammin’ Cameron with support as a New Works' Artist In Residence, brings together performers and audience members to celebrate the roots of wh/aacking through a 7-smoke battle and work-in-progress performance of pound by Lyzah.

COLORES was created in 2024 by Alyssa Favero and Ana Sosa to celebrate the vibrancy of contemporary and street / club dance in one space.

Wh/aacking is a powerful dance form with history that celebrates queer folks of African, Latine and Asian descent. Lyzah’s newest work pound highlights wh/aacking and use of voice as a practice to liberate self and generations before and after.  This celebration will include a 7-smoke wh/aacking battle, excerpts of pound, and disco social with DJ Pelleriina. Throughout the event there will be opportunity to both dance and mingle with fellow community members.

Residency Reflections

An intimate look into artistic process

Each season, with generous partnership from the Roundhouse Community Centre, New Works supports 1 - 3 artists in a Theatre Residency; dedicated time in a fully-equipped theatre setting to develop a new piece or facet of their practice without the pressure of a pending performance. These artist-led residencies provide essential space, time, and theatrical resources, supporting artists as they bridge their work from the studio to the stage.

At the culmination of each residency, artists welcome the public into a shared moment of curiosity and reflection; this is Residency Reflections. The artist chooses the format of the reflection - maybe an artist talk, open rehearsal, workshop, performance, or installation - as best serves their work and process.

By bringing our focus to creative practice, not creation, Residency Reflections centers artist-audience exchange and celebrates the often unseen moments of creation — the questions, experiments, and relationships that shape new choreographic work.

We’re pleased to support Lyzah and collaborators in sharing COLORES as part of their Theatre Residency this October.
